What is a Community Foundation?

A community foundation is publicly supported, tax exempt nonprofit organization that receives gifts from individuals, families, corporations, private foundations and governmental agencies. These gifts are carefully invested for maximum return and growth. The income from endowed funds is used to support programs and organizations that benefit the community.

Donors do not give to a community foundation; they give to their community…
through a community foundation.

The Sac County Endowment Foundation receives, accepts, and distributes funds for educational, cultural, civic and charitable purposes for the benefit of the greater community of Sac County. Our goals are to assist qualified organizations through grant distributions, encourage individual and corporate involvement through gifts and bequests, and to administer and invest funds for the creation of perpetual opportunities and services.

The Sac County Endowment Foundation was formed in 2005 as an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Carroll County. The founding members of the organization had a vision to ensure that our communities’ charitable programs were supported now – and in the future. We work together with many individuals, families, business, and organizations to establish endowments funds that will provide grant awards for years to come.

The Sac County Endowment Foundation is governed by a local board of directors who are active in our local communities. Members of our board of directors are: Dawn Potthoff, Wall Lake; Ellis Byriel, Lytton; Kay Montano, Lake View; Wilma Fort, Sac City; Nancy Janssen, Auburn; Elaine Rex, Odebolt; Dean Stock, Lake View; Chris Mason, Early; Gary Wicker, Lake View; and Brian Woodke, Schaller.

Each year the Sac County Endowment Foundation will receive some funding from the Iowa Gaming revenue – as established by the 2005 County Endowment Fund under the Iowa Department of Economic Development. Of these funds, 75% must be used for projects in the county and 25% must be retained in a permanent endowment fund intended to attract other donations and provide a source of permanent funding for charitable projects within the county.

Any individual, business, corporation or organization can make a contribution to the Sac County Endowment Foundation – either to be used for a specified project or to be retained in the permanent endowment fund.
